Barnaby Tobias

I teach from 7+ to GSCE level, however my main emphasise is on primary school ages. I have experience in 7+ and 11 + entry exams and know the criterion well. I specialise in English and reasoning, but I’m also confident with maths and I am very familiar with the primary school syllabus. I’ve taught students with learning difficulties and have experience working with pupils who find it hard to cope in classroom environments. I consider myself highly energetic and full of patience, as well as having a good sense of humour and therefore a good match for younger children. Through my past jobs I have formed wonderful relationships with families and students, and keep in contact with one or two parents who like to keep me updated on their progress.

I find for 7+ and 11+ success, the student needs almost as much emphasis on the reading of the questions and a calm response to the exam, as on the learning of the required material. Therefore, I include short, thought-based exercises to help with focus and concentration, which can prove very useful in exam situations. I also bring unique exercises for developing handwriting, phonics, spelling, times tables, reasoning and more. I have a strong enthusiasm for creative writing, storytelling and grammar and like to adapt my lessons based on the independent need of every child.

My Steiner education helped me learn through oral and eye contact, not textbooks, I try to instil this practise alongside textbooks and screens to accommodate for all learning needs and give a different ‘flavour’ to the classroom. I often break up ‘heady’ sessions with bursts of play and physical activity (learning games), as I find attention spans can be rejuvenated with short, frequent breaks. My main aim is to bring a more rounded feel to learning, a personalised balance of play and study.

As well as tutoring, I am an actor and writer, founder of Mysterium Press (an independent poetry press) and the Marylebone Emerging Writers Group, based at the Marylebone Theatre, where I worked as a literary manager. I’ve had two plays performed and have worked as an actor for Netflix and The Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as others.
