At Hyde Tutoring, assessments are a fundamental element of our tutoring services. Our comprehensive assessment approach helps us identify each child’s unique learning needs, enabling us to tailor our teaching methods to maximise their potential.
Assessment
Standalone Academic Assessments
Assessments are a crucial way for parents to get clear visibility on how their child is progressing academically. This can be used to make informed decisions about their child’s future academic journey and how to maximise their child’s potential. Parents opt for academic assessments for various reasons, sometimes to help them to select suitable target schools ahead of entrance exams or to identify whether their child is academically meeting their potential or as the first step to identifying whether their child may well have additional needs.
The assessment process starts with a telephone consultation, to learn more about your child and their goals. Then a tutor, who specialises in assessments comes to your home. The assessment process is conducted over a few hours. They are very thorough, so that we can gain a detailed understanding of your child. The tutor may also ask to view school work and school reports, to help them to form a more detailed picture of your child’s performance and their potential. Following the assessment, we write up an in-depth report on your child. The report includes our findings about their current academic level, any observations about their potential and information about their focus, thinking methods, approach and behaviour. We also advise on how you as parents can help your child to reach their goals, whether this is with regards to entrance exams and moving schools or helping them to fulfil their potential at their current school or considering further exploration of possible educational needs, through an educational psychologist (we have an inhouse educational psychologist who can assist you further).
Informal assessments
Before starting any one-to-one or group tutoring we conduct an initial assessment to evaluate the child’s current academic abilities in the subjects they will be being tutored in. If you have not opted for a formal assessment (as outlined above), we will conduct an informal assessment process, typically over a couple of lessons. This assessment serves as a baseline to understand their strengths and areas that may require improvement. Tutors customise lesson plans based on assessment results, focusing on the areas that will benefit the student the most. This individualised attention ensures that each student receives a learning experience tailored to their specific needs.
Ongoing Monitoring
We continuously monitor progress throughout the tutoring sessions and courses, using a variety of tools such as quizzes, assignments, and informal evaluations. This ongoing monitoring allows us to adjust our teaching strategies in real time, ensuring that each child is receiving the support they need to thrive.
Mock Exams
For students preparing for exams, we incorporate mock exams into our syllabus. Mock exams give students the chance to practice their skills and manage their time effectively. All of our revision courses include a formal mock exam, under exam conditions, this is a really valuable experience as it assesses the child’s level and progress, as well as ascertaining how good their exam technique is too. Following mock exams during our revision courses, we provide detailed written feedback, highlighting what they did well and areas where they can improve.
